To be grateful is not difficult as long as we get nice presents that we’ve been wishing for. But what about being grateful “without a reason”, or expressing contentment even in the face of adversity?

It all starts with accepting everything as it is. It starts with saying YES rather than no – saying YES to belonging together, including everybody and everything, with no exception. Simply by caring we offer people, things and situations the option to tune into the flux of togetherness. Should there be any reluctance, a positive attitude will help to transform resistance. If it really comes from the heart, caring sends a healing impulse.

In meditation it becomes possible to leave our usual way of thinking rooted in polarity. Meditation helps to overcome a dismissing attitude and to concede a deeper meaning to everything, even if we don’t (yet) understand.

Then it will become clearer that we are endowed with gifts all the time: life itself and all creation. We take many things for granted, yet everything – big or small – is worth to be recognized and to be welcomed in the common whole. The “YES of gratefulness” enhances confluent togetherness. It fuels growth and healing – within and around us.

continue...

In order to be able and receive presents we need our hands to be free. We have to let go of something old if we wish to take hold of something new. It shows that gratefulness has something to do with being able to let go. If we are open-handed, we are more likely to receive. The flow of give and take keeps going, and gratefulness becomes a permanent companion.

Sometimes we refuse to accept presents. We cannot or do not want gifts to be bestowed on us, or even recognize them as such. Past experiences of being hurt, deceived or rejected may be at the source of it, calling for release. It is time to allow ourselves to say YES – which is a YES to ourselves, including all doubts and reservations we may have.

It’ll make us realize that we give a gift to ourselves: acknowledging our inmost divine core that enables us to transcend polarity and live the real self. Once this experience is inscribed in our consciousness, gratitude becomes a lasting state of mind, a true companion through foul and fair.

A State of Mind

[1
